Hey, Nightfarers. I woke up, grabbed my controller, and immediately checked the title screen because patch 1.02.3 has landed for ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN. If you are playing on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, or Steam, this one is for you. And yes, online play requires the update, so do not try to sneak into the Deep of Night on an old regulation file—you will just get politely shoved back to the title screen. The version numbers are App Ver. 1.02.3 and Regulation Ver. 1.02.3. On PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, you can download the regulation file by logging into the server. If the lower right corner of your title screen does not say 1.02, select LOGIN and apply the latest regulation. After downloading, restart the game and apply the update. That part is as mandatory as a Mimic Tear in a boss fight.

🛡️ Deep of Night Ranking Protection and That Shiny New Icon

Let me start with the part that made me exhale like I had just survived a Malenia waterfowl dance: rank loss protection. For Depth level 3, you get protection for 1 defeat. For Depth levels 4 and 5, you get protection for 2 defeats. This protection also applies even after you reach those levels again after a Depth level demotion. If a Depth level 1 player is matched with higher-ranking players during a Depth level 2+ expedition, the level 1 player will not lose points upon defeat. That is huge for anyone who has ever been the little fish in a very angry pond.

There is also a new Expedition menu icon for reaching the Depth 5 maximum rating in the Deep of Night mode. If you already hit max rating at Depth 5 before this update, you still get the updated icon. Consider it a tiny medal for surviving the kind of night that makes the Erdtree look like a nightlight.

Now, ranking protection is like a paper umbrella in a monsoon: it will save you once, maybe twice, but you still need to respect the storm. The Deep of Night has been buggy in ways that made rankings feel less like a ladder and more like a haunted elevator. The developers identified two big issues: ranking changes not being correctly applied after the end of an Expedition, and ranking changes being applied cumulatively with the ranking changes of a subsequent Expedition. A provisional fix is in Patch 1.02.3, but they are still investigating and plan to address these in future updates. So do not treat your rank as carved into stone just yet.

⚔️ Weapon and Combat Balance Changes

I am a simple player: I see dash attacks getting buffed, and I start planning a new build before my coffee is done. Most weapon types received increased attack power and stagger damage for Dash and Strong attacks. Thrusting Swords got increased stagger damage for dual-wielding jump attacks. Curved Greatswords and Heavy Thrusting Swords had their dual-wielding jump attack stagger damage decreased. The Improved Skill Attack Power (+1, +2) Passive Effects are now more potent. That means skill-focused builds are eating well, and I am absolutely here for it.

A few defensive and relic interactions were cleaned up too. The effects of Taking Damage Causes XXX Buildup Relic Effects and the Taking Damage Boosts Damage Negation Passive Effect no longer activate when guarding against enemy attacks. The [Revenant] Expend own HP to fully heal nearby allies when activating Art Relic Effect now also applies to allies rescued from near-death status. The Gradual Restoration by Flask special effect now provides a small instant heal upon using the Flask, in addition to the existing gradual healing. And the Guard counters trigger holy bursts special effect was adjusted so the explosion does not cancel the staggered state of enemies hit by the burst. This is a reapplied fix, because the previous implementation in patch 1.02.2 was incorrect. Better late than never, I suppose.

🧪 Relic Effect Adjustments That Matter

Relic effects are the seasoning of a Nightreign build, and this patch moved a few spices around. The [Wylder] Character Skill inflicts Blood Loss Depth Relic effect now inflicts more Blood Loss. The [Raider] Hit with Character Skill to Reduce Enemy Attack Power Depth Relic effect has an extended damage weakening duration. The [Ironeye] Character Skill Inflicts Heavy Poison Damage on Poisoned Enemies Depth Relic effect applies less Poison, but the damage dealt to poisoned enemies when hit by the skill is now based on their remaining HP. The [Revenant] Increased Max FP upon Ability Activation Depth Relic effect had its balance adjusted.

Balance changes are like tuning a cathedral organ while the congregation is still singing—you might hit a sweeter note, but everyone in the room feels the shift. Some of these changes will make certain builds feel smoother, and others will make you rethink that one relic you have been hoarding since launch. I am already imagining a Blood Loss Wylder tearing through a night boss while my Ironeye quietly judges me from the corner.

🐉 Boss Adjustments in the Deep of Night

Bosses got some love, or some much-needed discipline, depending on how you look at it. The night boss versions of Ancient Dragon, The Duke's Dear Freja, Tibia Mariner, and Great Wyrm had their HP reduced. Valiant Gargoyle is easier to stagger and has reduced HP. Fallingstar Beast and Full-Grown Fallingstar Beast have reduced resistance to poison, rot, and blood loss Status Ailments. During an Everdark Sovereign Augur Expedition in the Deep of Night mode, Maris, Fathom of Night has reduced HP and attack power.

Boss or Enemy Change
Ancient Dragon, The Duke's Dear Freja, Tibia Mariner, Great Wyrm Reduced HP for night boss versions
Valiant Gargoyle Easier to stagger, reduced HP
Fallingstar Beast and Full-Grown Fallingstar Beast Reduced poison, rot, and blood loss resistance
Maris, Fathom of Night during Everdark Sovereign Augur Reduced HP and attack power

That table is not just for show. If you have been banging your head against a particular night boss, this patch might be the permission slip you needed to try again. I know I will be revisiting a few fights that previously felt like trying to hug a thunderstorm.

🐛 Bug Fixes: The Good, the Weird, and the Relic Menu

This patch is stacked with bug fixes. Siluria's Woe Skill had a bug where the follow-up wind vortex attack would not hit enemies after the weapon part did. Crimsonwhorl Bubbletear could reactivate after expiring under some conditions. Allies healed by the Flask Also Heals Allies effect were not properly healed if the player had Gradual Restoration by Flask. FP was not recovered when using the Flask under some conditions if the player had the Unifying Fate special effect. Sleep Produces a Mist of Sleep could continuously generate mist under some conditions. The Slowly restore HP for self and nearby allies when HP is low Relic effect would also apply to Maris, Fathom of Night when the player character fell asleep from its attacks. Some attacks from Gladius, Beast of Night would not hit the player character under specific conditions during the Everdark Sovereign Tricephalos fight. Summoned sinners by Libra, Creature of Night may not be rendered during the Everdark Sovereign Equilibrious Beast fight. The near-death gauge could be pre-filled during the battle against the final Nightlord. In the Deep of Night mode, latent power dropped by defeating the Night Assassin could add an unintended Skill to Wylder's Greatsword. And in the Relic Rites menu, Deep Relics equipped by allied Nightfarers could be sold. That last one is the kind of bug that makes you side-eye your friends.

There is also a sound effect added when the Attacks Impaired on Occasion passive effect triggers. The effect timer activation for Guarding Ups Sorceries & Incantations and Shielding Creates Holy Ground no longer resets when guarding against an enemy attack. The icon displayed in the log when marking enemies in Evergaols with pins incorrectly showed the icon for regular tough enemies instead of Deep of Night variants. The color of icons indicating the increase or decrease amount caused by detrimental Passive Effects was incorrect. Unique armaments did not appear in the Sorcerer's Rise Untold Power. The number of scarabs appearing as variants in Shifting Earth: Noklateo, the Shrouded City exceeded expectations. In Shifting Earth: Rotted Woods, some graces were not displayed on the map when missing map information. And skill attacks enhanced by the [Raider] Hit with Character Skill to Reduce Enemy Attack Power Depth relic effect that would make enemies flinch when hitting them would fail to do so.

Bug fixes are like pulling weeds from a night garden: the ground looks better, but you know something else will sprout by the next patch. Still, I appreciate the cleanup. The Deep of Night is already a place where every mistake feels like it echoes, so fewer weird bugs means fewer moments where I blame the game instead of my own dodge timing.

🔄 How to Update and What Comes Next

After downloading the update file, restart the game and apply the update. Online play requires the player to apply this update. If the Regulation Ver. listed in the lower right corner of the title screen is not 1.02, select LOGIN and apply the latest regulation before enjoying the game. Further updates will be distributed in the future so we can continue to enjoy ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN more comfortably.

So, what is my takeaway? Patch 1.02.3 is not a total overhaul, but it is a meaningful tune-up. The ranking protection changes make the Deep of Night less punishing for players who are still climbing. The weapon buffs give dash and strong attacks more teeth. The boss adjustments open the door for more builds to shine. And the bug fixes smooth out some of the roughest edges in the endgame. I am going to log in, check my title screen, and see if my rank survived the night. If you see a Nightfarer running a Blood Loss Wylder and pretending not to panic, that might be me. See you in the Deep of Night. 🌙

Recent trends are highlighted by Destructoid, whose gaming coverage often emphasizes how balance patches can reshape both player confidence and encounter flow; in the case of ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN 1.02.3, the combination of Deep of Night rank-loss protection, buffs to dash and strong attacks, and targeted reductions to several night boss health pools suggests a deliberate push toward fairer progression without stripping away the mode’s trademark pressure.
